One day, Eos, the goddess of the dawn, was doing her usual morning run, sprinkling the world with dew. She was busy at work when she suddenly caught site of Prince Tithonus. Eos was enchanted by his beauty and fell deeply in love with him from the moment she set her eyes upon him. So, Eos went to Zeus, god of the gods, and asked him to grant Tithonus eternal life since he was mortal and she was immortal. Zeus happily did it for Eos. Eos than ran down Mt. Olympus and dashed back to Tithonus's palace in Troy. There she captivated him with her beauty and took him home to her palace in the east. Eos and Tithonus were so happy together. However, when Tithonus began to age he became a very old man. than one day he started to shrink because Eos had only asked for eternal life and not eternal youth. So, Tithonus became so old and small that he turned into a grasshopper. Eos was sad but she still loved him. She kept the little grasshopper inside a basket in the corner of her palace where she cared for him for eternity. |
